Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations at Geneva Dr. Hala Hameed has said that the Maldives has been an example to other small island states in participating in the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Maldives has put forth its candidature for the Human Rights Council for the term 2018-2020 at the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Speaking PSM News, Dr. Hala Hameed said the one of the reasons why the Maldives is seeking another term at the UN Human Rights Council is to bring the efforts of the Maldives in protecting and upholding Human Rights to the international stage.

“Maldives' determinations in protecting the rights of small island states is also a huge factor in seeking another term. Maldives has also been campaigning for the rights of women and children at the United Nations over the years,” she added.

Maldives has been a member of the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms in 2011-2013 and 2014- 2016 and is currently on a one year mandatory break.
