Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade have reached an agreement to strengthen local expertise in electric vehicle maintenance, giving technical staff in the Maldives the opportunity to train in the repair and upkeep of electric vehicles and charging stations.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy described it as a significant step towards a sustainable transport system, with specialist training for staff in relevant sectors aimed at equipping Maldivian technicians to maintain electric buses and other vehicles over the long term.
The Integrated, Sustainable and Low Emissions Transport in the Maldives (ISLET) project supplied the electric buses and other vehicles and continues with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Developing the skills to keep these vehicles in service forms part of the Government’s efforts to protect the environment and reduce harmful emissions from transport.
The ministry noted that the agreement would also build the technical capacity needed for future environmentally friendly transport systems. The Government expects that expertise to help keep existing vehicles and charging infrastructure in sustainable use over the long term.
