Inflows to Sovereign Development Fund projected to rise to USD 149 million next year

The Sovereign Development Fund is projected to receive USD 149.16 million next year, representing an increase over the amount expected to be deposited during the current fiscal year, state budget forecasts indicate.

Established to manage emergency contingencies, service foreign infrastructure loans, and cushion the economy against external macroeconomic shocks, the fund operates separately from the Maldives Monetary Authority’s official foreign exchange reserves.

Deposits for the current fiscal year stand at an estimated USD 142.67 million, while 2027 budget figures show inflows rising to USD 149.16 million next year. Contributions are projected to expand progressively over the medium term, reaching USD 162.13 million in 2028 and USD 175.10 million in 2029.

The 2026 fiscal year marks the highest debt servicing outlay to date, with repayments reaching an estimated USD 758.75 million. Allocations for debt servicing are projected to contract sharply next year to USD 285.34 million, official budget documents record.

External loan financing under the proposed 2027 budget is anticipated to yield USD 149.16 million. Domestic debt as a proportion of gross domestic product is forecast to reach 83.4 per cent by 2027, whilst external debt is expected to climb to 33.5 per cent. These ratios are projected to compress over the medium term, official forecasts show, as the economy recovers to pre-Middle East conflict levels, accelerated expansion initiatives take effect, and fiscal and debt sustainability measures are implemented.
