President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's defence policy is aimed at protecting and preserving the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty without relying on external parties, Minister of Defence and National Services Hassan Rasheed has said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking at the official Victory Day ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, Minister Hassan Rasheed highlighted major changes in the global security landscape, noting that the evolving international environment presents growing security challenges.
He said the public must recognise that the Maldivian people belong to one of the oldest independent nations in the region. He added that the country's proud independence is rooted in the unity of its people under the guidance of Islam.
The minister said the President’s defence policy focuses on safeguarding the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty through its own capabilities, without depending on external parties.
He noted that ongoing efforts to strengthen the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) are part of this policy. These efforts include training personnel for land, air and maritime operations, as well as acquiring modern equipment to enhance the military's operational capabilities.
"Today's youth must draw inspiration from the example set by the servicemen who fought against the enemies on 3 November. Their memory must be honoured forever. The servicemen who were martyred sacrificed their lives in the service of their religion and nation, working to protect the safety and security of the people," Defence Minister said.
In his address, the minister also said Victory Day serves as a reminder of the example set by previous generations, emphasising the importance of placing national interests above all else.
He stressed that the interests of religion and the nation must take precedence over personal interests, adding that the Maldives must work towards standing on its own feet rather than remaining under the influence of any external power.
