The Prosper MSME initiative has officially launched in the Maldives to expand market access for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) through postal networks, while exploring opportunities to support businesses through digital financing.
Maldives Post Limited, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Islamic Development Bank Institute have jointly launched a study under the initiative to explore how postal services and digital financing could help businesses reach new markets.
State Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Dr Abdulla Nazeer attended the launch ceremony at Maldives Post Limited as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he pledged the ministry's full support and highlighted the importance of establishing a suitable legal and regulatory framework through cooperation among relevant institutions.
Minister Dr Nazeer noted that digital ordering has become an increasingly important part of everyday business, making access to financing essential. He explained that businesses often need financial assistance to purchase supplies before fulfilling customer orders, with the smallest enterprises facing the greatest difficulties when such services become unavailable.
The initiative seeks to address these challenges by exploring ways to combine postal services, digital platforms and Islamic financing. Minister Dr Nazeer highlighted the importance of consultations in identifying practical solutions to help businesses secure the financial support they need.
Managing Director of Maldives Post Limited Ahmed Shafeeq highlighted the initiative's potential to make greater use of the country's postal sector. He noted that building on its longstanding history could help create a more inclusive, interconnected and prosperous digital economy.
Chief Executive Officer of the Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) Ilyas Ahmed also assured the initiative of the authority's full support. He highlighted the Maldives' selection as one of eight countries taking part in the study, which will explore how the initiative could work in the country.
As part of the initiative, Maldives Post Limited announced a five-day consultation process beginning on 1 November, bringing together policy and regulatory authorities alongside other stakeholders. The discussions will identify areas where MSMEs require assistance and help develop technical assistance programmes to address those needs.
The initiative ultimately aims to expand opportunities for micro, small and medium-sized businesses to reach domestic and international markets through postal networks. It also seeks to strengthen support through e-commerce, logistics and digital channels, helping businesses take advantage of opportunities in these sectors.
