Health Minister calls for urgent expansion of mental health initiatives

The Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali has called for a significant expansion of mental well-being programmes across the nation, citing an "alarming and heartbreaking" rise in mental health struggles among the Maldivian youth.

Speaking as the chief guest at the launch of the EPS Foundation’s "Shield and Shine Mental Wellbeing Project," the Minister emphasised that immediate intervention and strengthened policies are required to address the growing crisis.

Citing data from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Minister Geela revealed that mental health issues among the youth population have increased fivefold between 2015 and 2024. The statistics further highlight a heavy toll on students in higher education, with 58.9 percent experiencing moderate to severe anxiety, 28.9 percent suffering from depression, and 28.3 percent struggling with stress management. The Minister attributed these rising figures to environmental pressures and the impact of online experiences.

The newly inaugurated "Shield and Shine" project, piloted in Addu City’s Hithadhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo, aims to bridge the gap between those in distress and professional healthcare. Developed in collaboration with the Psychology Department of Eve Clinic, the initiative focuses on training wellness ambassadors. While these ambassadors do not provide diagnoses, they serve as vital facilitators who recognise early symptoms and guide individuals toward clinical assistance.

The EPS Foundation, an organisation established by EPS alumni in 2018, plans to run the project for an initial year with the goal of long-term sustainability. The initiative will also include regional awareness sessions for parents and students, conducted in partnership with island councils and educational institutions, to foster a more proactive approach to mental health within the community.
