President Muizzu hails 'strong foundation' for Maldives-Pakistan relations

A strong foundation for bilateral relations between the Maldives and Pakistan has been established following an official state visit, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced.

The assessment was delivered in a public statement issued following the conclusion of his three-day state visit to the South Asian nation, during which President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed completed an official itinerary spanning 20 to 22 October. The mission represented the first state visit by a Maldivian head of state to Pakistan in a decade, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The proceedings significantly fortified diplomatic ties between the two governments, officials stated, highlighting that the conclusion of new accords and the opening of fresh avenues for trade, investment, and economic collaboration demonstrated the priority both administrations place on mutual engagement.

Conveying appreciation for the reception extended to his delegation, the president characterised the visit as the beginning of an expanded diplomatic phase. "As I conclude my first State Visit to Pakistan," President Muizzu wrote, "I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my dear brothers, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Government, and the brotherly people of Pakistan for the exceptional warmth, affection, and gracious hospitality extended to my wife, my delegation, and me.." The diplomatic mission, the president observed, marked a turning point in bilateral relations: "This visit marks a defining moment in Maldives-Pakistan relations. We have agreed to turn a new leaf in our relationship and usher in a new era of partnership."

The centrepiece of the bilateral engagements was a joint commitment to elevate trade volume from USD 13 million to USD 200 million over the next two years. "At the heart of this new chapter," President Muizzu declared, "is our shared determination to increase bilateral trade from USD 13 million to USD 200 million within the next two years."

Commercial priorities were further detailed during proceedings of the Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum, which the Maldivian head of state addressed alongside Prime Minister Sharif. "The successful Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum, which I was honoured to address alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif," President Muizzu noted, "has laid an important foundation for translating this ambitious commitment into concrete investments, stronger business partnerships, and meaningful economic cooperation."

Tangible bilateral progress was marked by the formal exchange of 20 Memorandums of Understanding across multiple sectors. "The exchange of 20 MoUs during this visit," President Muizzu affirmed, "further demonstrates our resolve to move beyond aspirations towards practical cooperation and measurable results."

Departing the Pakistani capital, President Muizzu expressed confidence that the diplomatic groundwork laid during the visit would elevate longstanding ties through a shared vision. "I leave Islamabad with cherished memories, deep appreciation, and renewed confidence that we have laid the foundations for a stronger, more dynamic, and mutually beneficial partnership," President Muizzu stated. "Our six decades of friendship have brought us this far. Our shared vision and determination will now take us to new heights."
