Maldives participates in 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting

The Maldives has participated in the 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting (IEF17), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Maldives was represented at the forum held on 11 October by the State Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Dr Muaviyath Mohamed.

The energy forum is a major international forum which focuses on international discussions on strengthening energy security. Extensive discussions on ensuring energy security in a sustainable manner were held. Participants also discussed reducing emissions by promoting environmentally friendly electricity generation.

The forum further explored ways to attract long-term investment and financial assistance to the energy sector. Discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening relations between service providers and consumers and ensuring equal, easy access to services.

As the Maldives is an island nation, there are significant challenges in providing electricity services to each island. However, the government is taking measures to strengthen the energy sector and ensure its security through the establishment of resources and renewable energy investment. The government aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 33 percent by the end of 2028.
