The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has held a coordination meeting to strengthen the Maldives’ early warning systems, with a focus on community participation and ensuring warnings reach people in a timely manner, as the country remains highly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.
The ministry said the meeting, titled the National Early Warning Roadmap Coordination Meeting, was held as part of the Government’s efforts to protect lives and property from disasters. Representatives of relevant institutions and stakeholders discussed key priorities for strengthening the country’s early warning systems and agreed on important measures to develop a comprehensive roadmap for their effective implementation.
The roadmap will focus on improving climate resilience by building a society better prepared to withstand the various disasters associated with changing weather patterns. It will also promote risk-informed decision-making by using available scientific information and data to identify potential hazards in advance and implement appropriate preventive measures.
Another key priority is ensuring that disaster warnings reach everyone without delay, including communities on the most remote islands and people living in isolated areas. The system aims to deliver timely and easily understandable warning information to all communities across the Maldives.
The Environment Ministry described the meeting as an important and encouraging step towards strengthening the national disaster preparedness and response system and ensuring a safer and more secure environment for every Maldivian.
