The Maldives and Angola have signed two agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
The memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam signed the agreements on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Téte António, signed for Angola.
One of the agreements establishes a formal mechanism for regular political consultations between the two foreign ministries. It will allow the countries to discuss bilateral relations, exchange views on regional and international developments, and explore new areas of cooperation.
The second MoU, between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM) and Angola’s Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy, provides for cooperation in professional training, diplomatic skills development and the exchange of experience and best practices.
The agreements follow discussions between the two foreign ministers during a meeting in Male' in June and are intended to further strengthen relations between the Maldives and Angola.
The two countries established diplomatic relations on 10 November 2020.
