The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has disclosed the names of 33 parties who failed to pay the amount of tax determined and notified by the authority, with each owing more than USD 64,850 in unpaid taxes.
MIRA said it decided on its policy governing the disclosure of names of parties that fail to submit tax returns or make tax payments. Before making their information public, the authority contacted the parties by phone and SMS to notify them of the matter.
The authority said it clearly informed the parties of the penalties prescribed by law for failing to pay taxes and the measures that could be taken against them.
As part of efforts to recover unpaid taxes owed to the State, MIRA said it would continue to take the additional measures required under its enforcement policy consistently across all cases. The authority urged those who have yet to submit their tax returns to do so without delay and instructed those with outstanding tax liabilities to settle them as soon as possible.
MIRA's financial report for last month showed that efforts to recover payments owed to the State recovered USD 32.23 million during the month alone. The amount accounted for 3.01 per cent of MIRA's total revenue for the month.
