A major clean-up drive held under the hashtag “#Saafumaadhamaeh” has collected a total of 282.67kg of waste. The activity was organised to mark World Cleanup Day, or World Cleanup Day 2026.
The cleanup was held yesterday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Hulhumale’ Phase II beach area. More than 120 people participated in the cleanup, including Youth Organisations and Environment NGOs.
In an effort to understand the types of plastics that are littered on the beach, an audit using a total of 3,522 plastic items was recorded.
Villa College student association, MNU Student Union’s student wing 'ABYSS', Barnacles, Green Raajje, and Ripple helped with the organisation of the cleanup. Banyan Tree, Dhawa Ihuru, Parley Maldives, Scout Associations and Let’s Do It Maldives aided with the event.
World Cleanup Day was first marked in 2008 in Estonia. Today World Cleanup Day is participated by millions from over 190 countries across the world in efforts to find a solution for waste management issues.
The cleanup event was an important step at reminding people that along with cleaning up an area, it is important for society to take responsibility to keep their surrounding clean for the future of the Maldives.
