State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun surveying islands that will come under its management as it prepares to provide utility services across the Maldives following the Government's decision to dissolve Fenaka Corporation Limited.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on 7 September that the Government had decided to dissolve Fenaka, which has been providing utility services across the islands, and bring those services under STELCO. Following the decision, STELCO has begun preparations to provide utility services to every island in the country.
As part of those preparations, the company is conducting surveys to assess conditions on islands that will newly come under its management. STELCO said its teams are currently surveying utility services in Addu City and Thinadhoo City.
President Dr Muizzu has said the decision to dissolve Fenaka and bring its operations under STELCO forms part of measures to strengthen the management of Government-owned companies.
The Government said previous administrations had recruited more employees than the companies required, increasing expenditure and creating significant operational challenges. It said the restructuring would reduce employee numbers and, as a result, strengthen the companies' operations.
Before deciding to bring utility services across all islands under STELCO, the Government had already entrusted the company with utility services in four atolls.
STELCO also provides electricity services across the Greater Malé Area, the Maldives' most populous area.
