Relations between the private sectors of the Maldives and China must be advanced, Dr Fazeel Najeeb, the Maldivian ambassador to China, maintained during an exclusive interview with PSM News. While ties between the two governments remain exceptionally robust, the ambassador observed that fostering closer private-sector relations is of paramount importance, asserting that both nations stand to gain mutual benefits from such commercial integration.
Speaking with PSM News on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Media Forum in China, which he described as a significant platform convening and connecting regional media organisations, Ambassador Najeeb participated in a panel on utilising artificial intelligence as a new driving force for development. Addressing technological challenges facing developing states, he noted that while developing nations like the Maldives employ modern technologies, underlying expertise remains in short supply, underscoring the necessity of acquiring capabilities with China's assistance.
"It seems to me that the relationship between the private sectors of the two countries is what we most urgently need to develop," the ambassador stated, identifying cross-border commerce as requiring the greatest advancement. Explaining that this dimension centres fundamentally on trade and investment, he maintained that once this connection is firmly established, bilateral ties will be strengthened "in the truest sense."
Outlining fields for collaboration, Ambassador Najeeb highlighted education, technology, and specifically artificial intelligence, urging commercial entities to capitalise on the bilateral free trade agreement. As a preeminent manufacturing hub exporting substantial goods to the Maldives, China's pact paves the way for importing Chinese products at lower, more affordable rates.
