The doors of the State Electric Company are always open to talented young people wishing to advance in the field of engineering, the utility’s managing director, Dr Ali Azwar, said in a message marking National Engineers’ Day. Extending congratulations to engineers serving domestically and abroad in nation-building, Azwar also conveyed greetings to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, describing him as “an engineer for whom the nation is deeply proud”.
Characterising the profession as the backbone of national development, Azwar observed that STELCO takes pride in its 100 per cent Maldivian technical team, whose steadfast service ensures uninterrupted, round-the-clock public utilities. Reflecting on earlier staff who joined amid scarce resources and educational hurdles, Azwar noted that “the sweat and blood of those individuals form the foundation of today’s development”, recognising the contributions of both active and retired personnel.
The company has prioritised technical capabilities through specialised programmes, sending staff to European firms. STELCO secured 535 training opportunities in 2024 and 947 in 2025, with higher education pathways remaining open and a substantial portion of engineers developed directly by the utility.
Although student enrolment in engineering remains comparatively low, Azwar maintained that the discipline remains rich in productivity and essential for national progress. Reaffirming that doors remain open to cultivate a generation fluent in advanced technologies, he noted that the continuous, 24-hour operation of the utility and the preservation of essential public services remain owed entirely to the tireless efforts of its engineers.
