President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that this year’s National Day should serve as a reminder to ensure that the Maldives never again experiences painful events that could threaten its independence.
The President made the remarks in a message shared on social media to mark National Day.
President Muizzu said that as the sun rises on National Day, the nation’s memories travel back 467 years to the past and to the victory of the courageous national heroes who liberated the Maldives from the suffering inflicted under Portuguese colonial rule.
He said that every time the Maldives has fallen under the control of foreign powers, betrayal by a significant number of individuals who did not have the nation’s best interests at heart had been a contributing factor. He added that on this National Day, the country should renew its determination to ensure that such painful experiences are never repeated.
Extending National Day greetings to the Maldivian people, President Muizzu called on citizens to uphold the principle of putting the nation first and to preserve the spirit and identity of the Maldivian nation in the hearts of every child of the country.
