23 hectares of land reclaimed in Muli Island of Meemu Atoll

Muli Island Council said on Saturday that 23 hectare of land have so far been reclaimed in the ongoing land reclamation project of the island.

The project to reclaim 40 hectares of land in Muli Island of Meemu Atoll was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in 2014.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed within five months.

Vice President of Muli Island Council Ahmed Shathir said the project was still underway after two years, and attributed delays to the slow progress of the work.

He said that “after a two-month suspension, MTCC acquired a new dredger and sub-contracted the project to Malaysia-based Evosion Company.”

“The Housing Ministry has already formulated the land-use plan for the new addition to the island,” he added.
