Foundation work begins for new 50-bed hospital in Muli

The foundation work for the much-anticipated new hospital building in Muli has officially begun, marking a significant milestone in healthcare development for Meemu atoll's residents.

The new 50-bed hospital is being constructed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which confirmed that foundation work on the building has now commenced.

The Muli Hospital project was inaugurated on 20 May last year during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's visit to the island, setting the stage for this expanded development.

The four-storey hospital building will provide comprehensive additional services at the Muli Regional Hospital, which currently serves as the main healthcare facility for the atoll's population of around 7,400 people. In addition to the main hospital building, the project includes construction of an office building for administrative purposes.

The new facility will offer an array of medical services including consultation rooms, an operating theatre, emergency room, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), pediatric ward, dental services, physiotherapy, and radiology. The building will also feature private rooms, a meeting room, and a children's play area.

Spanning over 32,000 square feet, the project has been awarded to MTCC for around USD 11.1 million.

The Muli Regional Hospital, which the people of Meemu Atoll have relied on for health services for over 30 years, has seen limited development in recent decades despite its importance to the community.

The new hospital building is expected to bring about a major transformation in healthcare services for residents of the entire atoll.
