President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that improving the social fabric of a nation must begin with the building of strong and resilient families.
The President made the remarks in a social media post shared to mark the International Day of Families, observed globally on 15 May each year.
In his message, President Muizzu noted that parents form the foundation of a family, adding that one of the most important commands in Islam, after belief in the oneness of Allah, is to treat parents with kindness and obedience. He said this demonstrates the high regard and significance Islam places on the family institution.
The President further stated that the noble bond of blood created within a family is a connection that can never be severed. He emphasised that strengthening the social fabric of a nation must start with building strong and resilient families.
Extending his greetings on the occasion, President Muizzu prayed for every Maldivian citizen to be blessed with a happy life filled with familial love and care.
Since assuming office, President Muizzu has introduced various initiatives aligned with policies aimed at addressing social issues within the community while ensuring greater care and protection for families.
As part of these efforts, the government has been implementing the “Haalu Kihineh?” programme, translated as “How are you?”, which involves visiting citizens across the country to better understand their living conditions. According to the government, the initiative has now been conducted across a large part of the Maldives. In addition, under the government’s “A Family for Every Child” initiative, many children previously under state care have been transitioned into family environments.
Religious scholars widely agree that a strong family can only be built in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Since parents represent the most fundamental element of a family, the family unit remains the most vital institution in building human society. It is also globally recognised that when families are built on strong foundations and their bonds are maintained positively, relationships between individuals within society become stronger and more cohesive.
The International Day of Families is observed annually on 15 May to highlight the importance of family love and care, while also emphasising the need to preserve and strengthen family bonds.
