The Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Innovation and Digital Company (Mindco) have announced the launch of the 'Colab 26 Hackathon,' a collaborative initiative designed to accelerate digital transformation and foster innovation across the Maldives.
The hackathon represents a significant milestone in the nation's digital evolution, bringing together talented individuals to develop practical solutions that address real-world challenges facing the country. The event is being conducted under the auspices of the newly established National AI and Data Competency Centre, which was created through a memorandum of understanding between Mindco and BML.
The Colab 26 Hackathon builds directly upon the foundation established during the first two days of the Colab 26 conference, which served as a convergence point for ideas, discussions, and emerging trends in technology and innovation.
Participants in the hackathon will be organised into teams and challenged to develop functional prototypes within two distinct tracks, each targeting a critical area of national development.
According to BML, Track 1 of the hackathon will concentrate on the application of artificial intelligence in government operations and public services. Teams participating in this track will tackle challenges across multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, social security, state finance, environmental management, and tourism. The primary objective of this track is to harness the power of AI to streamline government services, enhance operational efficiency, and develop decision-support tools that can help policymakers make more informed choices.
Track 2 of the competition will explore the frontiers of financial technology through the innovative Swipe API platform. In collaboration with BML, participants will have exclusive access to this powerful tool, enabling them to design and develop next-generation financial applications that have the potential to reshape the landscape of digital payments in the Maldives.
The hackathon forms a cornerstone activity of the National AI and Data Competency Centre, which was established as part of the landmark partnership between Mindco and BML.
