New “Reading Retreat” library opens at Salahuddin School

The library developed at Salahuddin School by Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC), with support from Alia Investments, has officially opened.

The new library, named “Reading Retreat”, can accommodate up to 150 students at a time. The facility was inaugurated by Alaau Ali, Managing Director of Alia Investments. The ceremony was attended by State Minister of Education Dr Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Salahuddin School Principal Nasiha Idrees.

Speaking at the ceremony, Alaau described the project as the company’s largest investment in a school and said it would improve children’s learning experiences. State Minister Dr Abdul Latheef highlighted the importance of reading and encouraged students to make full use of the library. Principal Nasiha thanked ARC and Alia Investments, noting the library would benefit more than 2,700 students.

The library includes several specialised learning spaces designed to encourage reading, collaboration and interactive learning. Key facilities include a “Dialogue Den” for group discussions and communication activities, individual reading spaces, a soundproof interactive classroom area, and a “Staff Studio” for teachers to prepare lessons and administrative work.

According to ARC, the project aims to support creativity, critical thinking, communication skills, and reading habits among students. The association said it hopes to help establish similar facilities in schools across the Maldives in the future.
