Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has committed to addressing widespread concerns regarding the administration of the government's taxi loan scheme, vowing to ensure a fair and swift resolution for all borrowers.
The Minister's assurance comes in direct response to a letter sent via social media, which highlighted significant hardships faced by citizens who participated in the programme. The scheme was initially introduced to provide loans for Maldivians, particularly those in the Greater Male’ region, to acquire vehicles for taxi services.
However, the letter outlined critical operational failures, noting that severe delays in the practical process of registering the vehicles have left many borrowers in a difficult position. Despite these cars remaining officially unregistered and unable to generate income, borrowers have been forced to meet loan repayments. The author argued that it is unjust to force borrowers to repay loans without allowing them to earn the expected income from their investment.
In his response, Minister Saeed insisted that he considers resolving these issues a top priority, assuring a swift resolution to the concerns. The Minister has now formally directed the relevant transport authorities to investigate all the concerns mentioned.
Emphasising the government's overarching policy, Minister Saeed reiterated that the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is dedicated to serving the people closely and efficiently. He affirmed that the President's core policy is to always listen to the concerns of citizens and work to facilitate their needs through the relevant laws and regulations, promising a quick resolution to this pressing matter.
