Runoff elections conclude with polls closed

Ballot boxes for the runoff of local councils and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) have now been closed after voting concluded.

Voting for this election began at 8:00 in the morning. Although voting at some stations started late, the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) did not extend voting hours at any station.

After the queue was closed at 4:00 pm, voting continued for those already in line, and once they had finished voting, the ballot boxes were sealed. Counting of votes is scheduled to begin 30 minutes after the ballot boxes are closed.

Today, runoff voting was held in five constituencies. These include electing a member for a seat reserved for women in the Dhonfanu Council in Baa Atoll, as well as electing a councillor for the Dhadimagu constituency of Fuvahmulah City.

In addition, elections for Women’s Development Committees were held to elect members to positions including the presidency of the committee in Kelaa in Haa Alif Atoll, and member positions in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Maavah, in Laamu Atoll.

A total of 14 ballot boxes were placed for the elections, with six of them located across three areas in Malé. According to information released by the Elections Commission, 6,093 people were registered to vote in these polling stations.
