Empowerment Hub for disabled persons to open in July

The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare has announced that the Empowerment Hub for persons with disabilities is expected to become operational by July this year.

The facility, located on the first floor of Tower 7 of Amaan Udhares in Hulhumalé Phase II, has been under development since January, with construction work currently ongoing.

The hub is designed to support individuals who have completed formal education by helping them develop skills, gain work experience and achieve financial independence.

Programmes will cover a range of areas including culinary and hospitality services, retail work and information technology. Training in traditional handicrafts and other artistic skills will also be offered, alongside a dedicated space to exhibit and sell products created by participants.

The facility will also include meeting spaces for non-governmental organisations representing persons with disabilities, as well as programmes aimed at raising public awareness on how to support and care for individuals with disabilities.

Accessibility has been a key focus in the design of the hub. Features will include tactile pathways for visually impaired individuals and wheelchair users, a sensory room for people with autism, as well as accessible toilets and prayer facilities.

The initiative aims to enhance independence and increase community participation among persons with disabilities, while also preparing them for entry into the workforce. Additional services will be provided in collaboration with relevant NGOs, bringing multiple forms of support under one roof.

The project is funded through contributions from the Zakat Fund of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, and Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation.
