Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has said the high voter turnout in the elections held on 4 April reflects public trust in state institutions.
He made the remarks in a social media post noting the peaceful conduct of a major election without significant incidents.
The elections included local council elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a referendum on a constitutional amendment to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
In his post, the minister noted that voter turnout reached 73 percent, the highest ever for a council election. This strong public participation shows confidence in state insitutiitions, he said.
The minister said the elections were conducted peacefully and smoothly, showing the government’s continued commitment to democratic governance and stability. He credited the government, under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, for prioritising inclusive national development.
International observers also praised the election process, noting it was well-organised and orderly. The observer team said its members were present across the Maldives and that the process generally progressed smoothly from start to finish.
A total of 14 observers from seven countries took part upon the invitation of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). In total, 38 international observers, including embassy representative, were present during the election.
