RTL ferry fares introduced in Laamu Atoll from tomorrow

RTL Ferry Services has announced that fares will be charged for ferry services in Laamu Atoll starting tomorrow.

Services were first introduced in Laamu Atoll on 1 April. As with other atolls, the first week of operations was provided free of charge to allow for trial runs, route assessments and the collection of public feedback, enabling adjustments to be made at an early stage.

According to RTL Ferry Services, fares have been determined and announced by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation based on route and distance. One-way tickets range from USD 2.26 for the shortest journeys to USD 8.08 for the longest routes, with return tickets offered at a discounted rate. Tickets can be purchased via the RTL mobile application, which also displays available routes and corresponding fares.

Two speedboats are currently operating in Laamu Atoll. Built with assistance from India, the vessels have a capacity of 48 passengers, including four designated seats for individuals with disabilities or those requiring special assistance.

The government is continuing efforts to expand RTL ferry services nationwide, particularly to areas that currently lack such connectivity. At present, services are operating across 15 atolls, linking 145 islands through a network of modern, high-speed ferries.

The service is expected to ease travel between islands, particularly for residents seeking access to medical services and other essential needs, due to its affordability.

RTL ferry services have yet to be introduced in Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu and Vaavu atolls. The government aims to extend the service to all atolls by mid-2026.
