Landmark Thilamale’ Bridge project reaches 70 percent completion

The Thilamale’ Bridge project, one of the Maldives’ most ambitious infrastructure undertakings, is now 70 percent complete, with significant progress visible across the construction site.

Spanning 6.7 kilometers, the project includes a combination of bridges and causeways connecting Male’, Villimale’, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, dramatically improving transportation and economic integration in the Greater Male’ region.

Currently, the focus of construction is on casting and installing deck segments that link the bridge’s pillars, with 80 percent of the required 1,222 segments already cast and 46 percent successfully installed. On the western side of Male’, the bridge’s emerging structure is beginning to take shape, offering a tangible glimpse of the future link.

Meanwhile, causeway construction is advancing rapidly in Villimale’ and Gulhifalhu, with sub-base work underway in preparation for tarmacking. Shore protection, revetment, and culvert installation are also ongoing to ensure long-term durability against marine conditions.

The Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib confirmed that the bridge up to Villimale’ is expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the entire project is projected for completion by 2027.

Despite initial delays caused by contractual changes by the previous administration, the government is now working closely with the Indian government and the project contractor to accelerate progress.

Funded through a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million line of credit facility from India, with additional support from the Maldivian government, the USD 500 million project marks a transformative leap in the nation’s infrastructure development.
