Construction begins on Maafushi causeway linking reclaimed land

The practical work of the construction of a causeway between Maafushi of Kaafu Atoll and the island’s newly dredged area has officially commenced.

25 hectares of land were reclaimed in Maafushi in 2021. The new land mass was created separately from the island, and will be connected by the new causeway.

The inauguration ceremony for the causeway construction held on 1 March was attended by Member of Parliament Hussain Riza Adam, Minister of State for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed, and Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Mohamed Jamsheed.

The project’s scope includes building a 137-metre causeway to link Maafushi to the newly dredged land. The project has been awarded to MTCC at a cost of USD 2.29 million and is expected to be completed within 365 days.

The causeway will support Maafushi, a thriving local tourism island, in facilitating transportation. According to MTCC, land will be allocated from the reclaimed area for residential, industrial, and commercial purposes, helping strengthen goods transport and entry and exit from the island, as well as accelerating the local economy.
