The Ministry of Health has stated that gynaecology services have been inaugurated in nine islands within the past two years.
This is part of government efforts to strengthen and decentralise the healthcare system in the Maldives, aiming to provide access to necessary treatments to residents within their own island, from the nearest hospital. Over the past two years, several important healthcare services have been launched in hospitals and clinics throughout the atolls.
Gynaecology services have been inaugurated in the following nine islands: Milandhoo, Kanditheemu, and Komadoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Maamigili, Alif Dhaalu Atoll, Velidhoo, Noonu Atoll, Thimarafushi and Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll, Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, and Meedhoo, Raa Atoll.
Furthermore, internal medicine specialists have commenced services over past two years in the following six locations: Foakaidhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, Velidhoo and Holhudhoo, Noonu Atoll, Meedhoo, Raa Atoll, Dharavandhoo, Baa Atoll and Aaminaadhioa Health Clinic.
Dialysis services have also been expanded to 10 new islands under a policy established by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Laboratories have been established and operationalised in 11 of 76 islands by 18th February, under the aim of supplying all islands with laboratories by the end of this year.
