President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Estonia, highlighting expanding digital, environmental and political ties as the baltic nation marks 108 years of independence.
In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu extended greetings to Estonian President Alar Karis and Prime Minister Kristen Michal, as well as to the government and people of Estonia on the occasion of Estonia’s Independence Day. Estonia's Independence Day is marked on the 24 Fenruary.
President Dr Muizzu said he wished the Estonia a joyful celebration and a prosperous year ahead, noting that bilateral relations had strengthened in recent years through increased exchanges and cooperation.
President Muizzu pointed to his official visit to Estonia from 13 to 16 January 2025, marking the first such visit by a Maldivian head of state to the european nation. This marked a milestone in relations. During the trip, he observed Estonia’s widely recognised digital governance model and explored avenues for support in advancing the Maldives’ burgeoning technology sector.
Several agreements were signed during the visit, including frameworks for structured political dialogue and the inauguration of bilateral political consultations between the two governments. The two sides also agreed to cooperate in climate change, environmental protection and energy.
Additional agreements were concluded between the Maldives' Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and Estonia’s Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, aimed at strengthening collaboration in governance and digital development.
Estonian government representatives and organisations have expressed readiness to deepen collaboration, signalling what both sides describe as a shared commitment to mutual understanding and sustained partnership.
