The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) at Addu Equatorial Hospital has treated 16 patients since its launch on 28 January.
The Interventional Cardiology service was introduced through a collaboration between Addu Equatorial Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to expand advanced heart care services in Addu City.
The Cath Lab is equipped to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases. The facility uses a thin tube known as a catheter to examine the condition of coronary blood vessels. A contrast dye is injected into the vessels, and X-ray imaging is used to identify any narrowing or blockages. Where necessary, medical devices such as stents are inserted to restore proper blood flow.
Since its opening, seven patients have undergone Coronary Angiography (CAG) and angioplasty procedures, while nine patients received CAG diagnostic services.
Coronary Angiography (CAG) is a diagnostic test in which a catheter is inserted through the wrist or arm to examine the coronary arteries. A contrast dye is injected, and imaging is performed to detect any obstructions.
Angioplasty is a treatment procedure carried out when a blockage is identified. A small balloon is inflated at the site of narrowing to widen the artery, and a stent is usually placed to keep the blood vessel open, improving blood circulation to the heart.
The introduction of the Cath Lab marks a significant step in strengthening specialized cardiac care services in the southern region of the Maldives.
