In a major step toward transforming the Maldives’ maritime transportation network, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen has inaugurated the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) high-speed ferry service in Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking at a special ceremony held in Meedhoo, Minister Ameen emphasised that the government’s goal is to establish a safe, reliable, and internationally standardized transport system that unites the nation’s scattered islands into a cohesive, accessible network.
“Our islands should not be barriers—we must turn them into connecting paths,” the Minister said , underscoring the President’s vision of strengthening national connectivity and socio-economic integration.
The RTL service, jointly delivered by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC), is now operational in 13 atolls across the country, with today’s launch adding 11 new islands to the growing network.
The newly introduced service in Dhaalu and neighbouring Faafu Atoll will operate across three key routes, including an inter-atoll link connecting Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll) and Meedhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), facilitating seamless travel for residents and visitors alike.
Two dedicated ferries will serve the routes, offering scheduled, high-speed, and affordable transportation. MTCC announced that the first week of service will feature free rides to help communities familiarise themselves with the system, after which ticketing will commence on the 25 February via the RTL website and mobile application.
Originally launched in 2022 as a flagship initiative, RTL has already transformed mobility for over 123 islands, and its expansion into Zone 4—encompassing Thaa and other atolls—marks a significant milestone.
Minister Ameen highlighted that the project is one of the government’s most vital transport undertakings, heavily subsidised to ensure affordability and accessibility for all Maldivians.
“This is not just about transportation; it’s about building national unity, enhancing economic opportunities, and ensuring safe, reliable travel for every citizen,” he said.
The launch ceremony was attended by the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, MTCC Managing Director, Ahmed Saudi, government officials, and local residents, reflecting broad regional and international support for the initiative.
