“Gov’t focused on building sustainable sports development system”

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has stated that the government’s vision extends beyond constructing sports facilities, aiming instead to establish a sustainable and structured sports development system across the Maldives.

The Minister made the remarks while addressing the “Maldives Sports Awards 2025” ceremony. He emphasised that commitments made to the sports sector upon assuming office are being translated into concrete action under a comprehensive long-term national framework.

“Our vision is not to make every place we build just a playground. We are building a strong system for the development of sports in a sustainable manner,” Minister Rafiu said.

He explained that the long-term roadmap for sports outlines the strategic direction the government intends to pursue. The plan integrates infrastructure development, youth-focused programmes, advanced training pathways, and expanded international exposure opportunities for local athletes.

According to the Minister, projects under the roadmap include the construction of modern sports facilities nationwide, alongside targeted programmes to identify and nurture young talent entering the sporting arena. Advanced coaching and structured development initiatives are being aligned with national performance objectives to elevate Maldivian athletes onto the international stage, he added.

The government has accorded special priority to sports development, with numerous projects underway to establish modern stadiums, courts, and athletic tracks across the country. Several facilities have already been completed and officially handed over.

The minister reiterated that the overarching objective is to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports athletes, coaches, and professionals alike ensuring that sports development progresses in tandem with national goals and long-term planning.
