The reception was held at the official residence of the President of Germany, ‘Schloss Bellevue’. President Muizzu has undertaken this trip to Germany at the behest of an official invite from the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This marks a historic moment of diplomacy for the Maldives, as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu becomes the first Maldives’ President to receive an official welcome to Germany.
During the official welcome, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the German President inspected the guard of honor. As part of the ceremony, the two delegations representing the two nations exchanged diplomatic formalities and introductions. Afterwards, both President’s took a photo in remembrance of the special occasion and President Dr Muizz signed the Book of Guests at the Presidential Palace.
During the visit, President Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Frank-Walter Steinmeier and senior members of the Germany’s government. The programme also includes a business forum aimed at strengthening economic engagement between the two countries.
The President will visit Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he will speak on the Maldives’ experience in climate change adaptation. He is also due to address the German Council on Foreign Relations, presenting the Maldives’ perspective on the role of the ocean in foreign policy.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany, which were formally established on 5 July 1966.
