The government has undertaken a nationwide development initiate, with over 400 projects ongoing for the establishment and upgrade of essential services across all inhabited islands of the Maldives.
Addressing the nation at the opening sitting of the Parliament and delivering the Presidential Address, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a national initiative to bring bulk amounts of gravel to Maldives through the concerned agencies and stockpile them as a measure taken to streamline the ongoing development projects across the nation, has commenced.
The scale of the administration’s development agenda is unprecedented. Over 400 infrastructure projects are currently ongoing for the establishment of essential services throughout various inhabited islands of the archipelago. As such, during the Presidential Address, Dr Muizzu provided a detailed breakdown on the progress of all the projects. The breakdown is as follows: 165 habour development projects at various stages of implementation, 283 road development projects at various stages of implementation, 174 shore protection projects at various stages of implementation and 81 water and sewerage system projects at various stages of implementation.
The President also revealed that completion of water systems projects in 51 islands and sewerage systems in 41 island swill make the completion of the establishment of these services in all inhabited islands across the Maldives. He also stated that this initiative will be completed over the next 18 months.
In order to accelerate the progress of these projects, the government, state owned institutions and the private sector have collaborated, marking a historic moment in the nation’s development landscape. Of particular note, the government has assigned Road Development Corporation (RDC) for the procurement of the machinery required to accelerate these projects through a Chinese firm. The President revealed that these machineries will be brought to the Maldives by the end of April. Once these machineries arrive, the government projects that the projects implementation will advance steadily and be completed within the set timeframe.
