Over USD 35.5 million was disbursed as student loans in 2025, according to official statistics released by the Ministry of Higher Education and Skills Development.
Government spending on student loans has been increasing over recent years, exceeding USD 80.4 million in 2024 and 2025 combined. Of this amount, USD 35,538,262 was spent in 2025.
The data shows that a total of 596 students received loans in 2025, totalling 1,438 students over the past two years. Overall, 2,108 students have been granted student loans so far, with 1,740 students currently studying locally and across 36 countries under the scheme.
The loans allow students to study in countries of their choice, and prioritise fields vital to the Maldives such as construction and agriculture.
