MTCC completes half of drainage works on Malé north side road development project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) says it has completed half of the drainage works under the Malé North Side Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project.

In a post on social media, the state-owned contractor said sheet piling is continuing, while curbstone installation has begun along the upgraded pedestrian lane. Work is also under way to install new wastewater and water supply lines.

The project, which began on 9 December, is intended to modernise the busy Malé city market area, encompassing the fish market, local market, tourist market and port. The area is frequently congested due to high pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

To address these issues, the road is being widened by six metres and converted into a two-way street.

According to MTCC, the development aims to improve pedestrian access, ease traffic congestion, address persistent flooding caused by drainage problems and enhance accessibility for residents, cargo vehicles and vessels.

The construction covers a 250-metre section from the Local Market area to the North Harbour, forming part of a wider 1,088-metre stretch running from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour. Phase one, covering 140 metres, has been completed, while work on phase two is ongoing.

MTCC said it expects the second phase to be completed and the road opened to the public ahead of Ramadan.
