Maldives is hosting its inaugural National Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Forum at Kurumba Maldives, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s healthcare journey.
This two-day event, jointly organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Ministry of Health, brings together over 100 local and international experts to strategise on improving equitable access to healthcare.
Speaking to PSM News, Dr Ahmed Ashraf, Director General of Health Services, emphasised the need for accessible, barrier-free healthcare for all citizens, noting that despite high health expenditure—representing a substantial portion of GDP—the country’s service coverage index currently stands at only 70. The goal is to raise this to 80 and ultimately achieve full UHC by 2030, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr Ashraf highlighted challenges such as long patient wait times and out-of-pocket costs that force many to seek treatment abroad. The forum will draw on insights from regional partners, including representatives from India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as key UN agencies like UNICEF, UNDP, FAO, IOM, and major financial institutions.
Outcomes from the discussions will inform a comprehensive 2026–2030 roadmap aimed at strengthening the health system and ensuring quality services for every Maldivian, regardless of location or socioeconomic status.
