President Underscores Integrity and Accountability In Shaping The Future

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability as central pillars guiding the nation’s progress.
In a message issued to mark International Anti-Corruption Day, the President described the Maldives’ accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007 as a solemn national obligation. He emphasised that the country remains steadfast in upholding the principles of the Convention with transparency and determination.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted that systemic corruption poses a significant threat to the rule of law, hinders sustainable development, weakens democratic governance, and undermines the fundamental rights of citizens. He reiterated that the Administration enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy on corruption and remains committed to eradicating the issue.

Outlining several key initiatives underway, the President noted that the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation programme aims to modernise public service delivery, reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, and ensure transparency across all Government transactions. He also underscored the Anti-Corruption Commission’s work in asset recovery, including the development of a model law and proposed amendments to major legislation such as the Penal Code.

The President further highlighted preventive efforts by the Administration, including the 20-year National Development Plan aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Plan, the ‘Himmi’ Corruption Risk Self-Assessment Toolkit for public institutions and State-Owned Enterprises, and the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Academy to enhance institutional capacity and strengthen a culture of integrity nationwide.

Acknowledging the vital contributions of civil society organisations and UNCAC review mechanisms, the President noted their role in bolstering social accountability and international cooperation. However, he stressed that Government action alone is insufficient, calling on citizens and the private sector to play an active role in combating corruption. He added that the dedication and energy of the nation’s youth continue to inspire confidence in the Maldives’ future.

Concluding his message, the President reaffirmed the shared national responsibility to speak out, stay vigilant, and uphold honesty and transparency. He reiterated the Administration’s commitment to building a country where integrity thrives, democratic governance is strengthened, the rule of law prevails, and the justice system remains fair and impartial.

International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on 9 December, commemorating the adoption of UNCAC by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003.
