Defamation Act “vital tool” for nation building, says MP Ilham

Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed described the Defamation and Freedom of Speech Act as a “vital tool”, for efforts to build a civilised and developed community.

Speaking to PSM, Ilham echoed statements by other government-aligned lawmakers and described the law “necessary”, to mend the country’s social fabric and solve numerous problems facing the community. He further noted that “disingenuous” opposition figures, who make falsified statements to international media will be stopped through the law. He said the law not only provides protection for government officials, but provides equally to all to protect one’s reputation and good name while ensuring responsible journalism.

The bill, passed by Parliament on August 9, was signed into law on August 11.

The legislation criminalises defamation on four grounds; protecting the tenets of Islam, protecting national security, protecting the character and reputation of individuals; and, protecting social norms.
