Parliamentary Committee Clears Three Candidates for Final Vote on Media Regulator

A parliamentary committee has endorsed three nominees to the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, sending the matter to the full legislature for a final vote that will complete the membership of the country’s new media regulator.

The Committee on Independent Institutions confirmed that Safa Shafeeq, Aminath Sarahath Izzath, and Mohamed Farshath had each surpassed the required threshold in a competitive selection process. Shafeeq previously served as president of the now-dissolved Maldives Broadcasting Commission, while Izzath was a member of the same body.

Ten individuals initially applied for seats on the commission, though two withdrew before the interview stage. The committee interviewed the remaining eight candidates and assigned scores based on education, professional experience, and interview performance.

Parliamentary standing orders stipulate that only candidates who secure more than 75 percent of the total marks may be advanced to the floor. The committee confirmed that Shafeeq, Izzath, and Farshath were the only applicants to meet that standard. Their nominations are scheduled for consideration during Monday’s legislative session.

The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission is mandated to comprise seven members. Parliament is responsible for appointing three, while four are selected by broadcasters and other media outlets.

With the industry’s four representatives already chosen, the appointment of the three parliamentary nominees will complete the composition of the first commission established under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.
