President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the new heritage installation “Vaahaka Vau” during his visit to Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll for the National Day celebrations.
Situated in the natural forest adjoining the historic Kandhuvalu Mosque, the initiative presents an immersive story trail where visitors can trace the struggle of national hero Bodu Thakurufaanu, who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the 16th century.
The trail consists of 14 information boards placed sequentially along winding pathways, each narrating pivotal moments—from the Portuguese seizure of Male’ in 1558, through the construction of the legendary sailboat Kalhuoffummi in Baarah, to the decisive victory of 1573. By embedding these panels among the trees, the project blends education, art, and the island’s lush environment into a single experience.
The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage said that the “Vaahaka Vau” offers a unique opportunity to engage with Maldives’ history while enjoying the serenity of Utheemu’s forest. It aligns with President Muizzu’s vision to prioritise nationalism, preserve the legacy of Ghaazee Bandaarain, and generate sustainable revenue from cultural heritage.
The installation is part of the broader project to preserve the legacy of Ghaazee Bandaarain and generate revenue from heritage, which aims to transform Utheemu into a focal point for cultural tourism. The Ministry anticipates that the trail will draw both domestic and international visitors, lengthening their stay and boosting demand for local guesthouses, cafe’s, transport services, and artisan crafts.
By combining historical storytelling with natural beauty, Vaahaka Vau seeks to protect the island’s heritage, inspire younger generations, and create new economic pathways for the community.
