A total of six candidates have submitted applications to contest the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission elections.
The Media Commission, established under the newly enacted Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, will comprise seven members: three members appointed by the Parliament and four members elected by the media. Members of the Media Commission will serve a five-year term, with a maximum of two terms.
The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) opened application for those interested in contesting the election on 25 September, with the election scheduled for 11 October.
The deadline for submitting applications expired at 14:00 on Saturday. According to ECM, a total of six candidates had submitted their forms by the deadline.
ECM said of the four applications received for the broadcaster representative seat, the candidacies of three applicants were accepted. One of these three candidates has requested to withdraw from the election.
Two candidates applied for the seat representing other media outlets, with one candidacy accepted and the other rejected.
Voting will take place from 09:00 to 16:00 on Saturday. Voting stations will be set up only in Male’ City.
