Maldives' operational capacity for tourism has reached a new milestone, surpassing 64,700 tourist beds this year, driven primarily by continued expansion within the local tourism sector, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
The Ministry’s latest Daily Update report indicates that the total number of beds in operation for tourism nationwide has hit 64,758—an increase of 1,510 beds compared to the 63,248 available at the beginning of the year.
This infrastructure boom highlights the industry's rapid growth as it scrambles to accommodate record-breaking visitor numbers.
The growth has been most evident in the guest house market. So far this year, 15,798 beds have been brought into operation across 925 guest houses, marking an addition of 177 beds since the start of the year. Overall, the total tourist accommodation facilities now number 1,278, including 174 resorts, 925 guest houses, 163 safaris, and 16 hotels.
The vast majority of the nation’s capacity remains within high-end facilities, with resorts contributing 43,247 beds, followed by guest houses (15,798), safaris (3,229), and tourist hotels (2,484).
This rapid expansion of capacity is a direct response to soaring demand. Statistics show that 1,630,946 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year—a robust 9.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
With the government aiming to attract 2.3 million tourists before the year’s end, surpassing the record-breaking two million visitors last year, efforts to further develop and diversify the national tourism infrastructure remain central to official policy.
