A new orchid hybrid has been named in honour of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed during their official state visit, in a gesture emblematic of Singapore’s enduring diplomatic customs. The naming ceremony was held at the National Orchid Garden, nestled within the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the first and only tropical botanic garden recognised on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Their visit to the historic grounds on Monday followed an invitation extended by the president of Singapore. The couple toured the site, signed the official guest book, and were received by Dr Tan Puay Yok, Executive Director of the National Parks and Gardens Cluster and Group Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Singapore’s practice of naming orchid hybrids after visiting heads of state and dignitaries reflects a longstanding tradition of floral diplomacy, one that has come to symbolise goodwill and international amity. The orchid dedicated to President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha now joins the distinguished “VIP Orchids” collection.
The National Orchid Garden remains a prominent attraction, drawing both residents and international visitors. It is home to approximately 60,000 orchid plants and more than 1,000 distinct varieties, a testament to Singapore’s botanical legacy and the broader role of ceremonial tradition in international engagement.
