Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam has said expanding the Maldives’ engagement on the international stage is a policy of the Government.
Minister Iruthisham made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Global Business Network Forum 2026 and the Island Investment Forum.
She said that under the guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives is working to strengthen its engagement with the international community and ensure that the country’s voice is heard. The Government also gives priority to making use of opportunities available to the Maldives across different international platforms.
Minister Iruthisham highlighted the role the Maldives continues to play on issues concerning SIDS. She noted the country’s advocacy on the impacts of sea-level rise on small islands and its efforts to strengthen resilience to climate change, adding that the Maldives continues to play an important role in confronting and overcoming challenges arising from climate change.
“Our hopes for the Maldives are tied to a successful future. We believe that this cannot be achieved alone. Countries must work together to reach that goal,” Minister Iruthisham said.
Highlighting the importance of international cooperation, the Minister said platforms such as the SIDS Global Business Network Forum are particularly important for small island nations such as the Maldives.
She described the forum as an important step towards strengthening the resilience of Small Island Developing States and deepening cooperation between countries. She added that small island nations have set a strong example in confronting the challenges they face.
Minister Iruthisham said the forum, which specifically brings together Small Island Developing States, provides an important platform to address the challenges they face and strengthen cooperation.
Turning to the Maldives’ economic outlook, the Minister identified digitalising the economy as a key priority for the future. She said the country is also working towards more sustainable energy use and building a greener and more resilient Maldives.
She added that the forum would help Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives attract investors and create opportunities to work together.
“Our message is that Small Island Developing States are not a liability. They are a good investment. The Maldives is ready for positive opportunities,” she said.
While the Maldives has a small economy, Minister Iruthisham said it remains a promising one. She said Small Island Developing States need more innovative and positive approaches to remain on a path of sustainable development, adding that cooperation between countries and good investment can help achieve this.
