Australia has officially opened its first embassy in the Maldives. The embassy was established in the Hotel Jen building in Male’ City.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Maldives’ Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya emphasised the longstanding relationship between Australia and the Maldives, noting that the relationship between both countries is based on mutual trust and respect. The establishment of an Australian Embassy in the Maldives is a tesstament to the strengthening of bilateral ties, she said.
Minister Mariya further noted that Australia provides significant assistance to the Maldives in the fields of maritime security, education and healthcare. She concluded her speech by wishing progress, prosperity and happiness for both nations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Richard Marles said the establishment of an Australian embassy in the Maldives reflects Australia's desire to strengthen relations with the Maldives. Noting that Australia has provided assistance to the Maldives in the fields of education and capacity building, Deputy Prime Minister Marles said the two countries can also cooperate in the area of defence.
Australia's Defence Minister announced that the country will donate a vessel to maintain and support maritime security in Maldivian waters. He also said that efforts are underway to facilitate training opportunities for Maldivians through Australia’s Royal Navy. He stated that he looked forward to strengthening the relationship between the Australian Navy and the Maldives National Defence Force in years ahead.
Speaking at the ceremony, Australian Ambassador to the Maldives David Jessup highlighted some of the assistance Australia has provided to the Maldives in recent years. He noted that over 700 Maldivians have been trained in Australia, including many who are now in senior positions in the state and politics. He affirmed that the newly established embassy would work very closely with the Maldivian government in the future and facilitate cooperation in new sectors.
Australia and Maldives established formal diplomatic relations in 1974.
