The operations of the Criminal Court have accelerated multiple times over, Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef stated, as the progress of administering justice formed the focal point of discussion during an appearance on the PSM News programme ‘Raajje Miadhu’.
The duration of the criminal investigation phase has been significantly reduced over the past two years, Abbas noted, underscoring an objective to expedite proceedings further while assisting cooperating agencies with their workflows. Regulatory amendments have improved Anti-Corruption Commission operations, while the Maldives Police Service has strengthened investigative procedures alongside broad court improvements.
“When I assumed this position, one of the greatest complaints was the failure to resolve cases in the Criminal Court,” the prosecutor general observed. “Currently, they are conducting the work of the Criminal Court at such a fast pace that it is sometimes challenging for our prosecutors.”
Digitalisation and artificial intelligence will further bolster services upon the completion of the ‘PGO 2.0’ project, with technical assistance planned for other departments once finalised. “By the end of 2028 and moving towards 2029 and 2030, we will be on the same level,” Abbas asserted, noting that judicial bodies will stand on an equal footing with artificial intelligence assistants ensuring transparent administration.
Institutional advancement has been underpinned by government cooperation, Abbas explained. Upon assuming office, he sought the support of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to resolve internal administrative issues and reinforce the investigative framework, securing the president’s full and continuous backing.
