President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday formally inaugurated Muli Airport, marking a pivotal moment for Meemu Atoll as it welcomes its first aviation facility. The milestone concludes a decades-long pursuit of enhanced air connectivity for the region.
The ceremony, held in Muli, drew senior government officials, ministers, executives from state enterprises, and aviation sector leaders. Upon his arrival, President Muizzu was greeted by local residents, a reception that underscored the significance of the occasion for the community.
The push to develop Muli Airport gained momentum in 2021, when the government awarded the project contract to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Construction began in August of that year, following an agreement signed on 28 February 2021, with an investment of more than USD 12.97 million.
The airport's development required extensive land reclamation; 40 hectares previously reclaimed from the southeastern side of the island and an additional 14 hectares allocated around the runway. Its infrastructure includes a 1,200-metre-long, 30-metre-wide runway, a taxiway, and an aircraft apron. A modern passenger terminal, a control tower, and supporting operational facilities complete the project.
For residents of Meemu Atoll, the opening of Muli Airport marks the end of a prolonged wait. Despite comprising eight inhabited islands, the atoll had remained without an aviation facility, leaving communities reliant on maritime transport for decades. The inauguration signals a new era of accessibility, bringing long-sought air connectivity to the region.
Preparations for operations moved forward last month, culminating in a successful test flight on 25 April. With the airport cleared for service, the Regional Airports Company Ltd. (RACL), the operator of the airport, formally opened the runway to commercial flights. National airline Maldivian quickly announced scheduled routes.
Maldivian has launched ticket sales ahead of its inaugural flight to Muli, set for 24 May. The airline will operate weekly services every Saturday, with an estimated flight time of 35 minutes. Passengers travelling the route will have access to Maldivian's Premium Economy service, according to the airline.
The government views Muli Airport as a catalyst for broader economic progress. Beyond travel convenience, officials anticipate increased commercial activity, strengthened tourism opportunities, and expanded local industries, all driven by enhanced connectivity.
The inauguration was commemorated with a ceremonial plaque presented to President Muizzu by residents of Muli and representatives of MTCC. The event drew a significant turnout, as locals gathered to witness the realisation of a vision that had spanned decades.
