Minister announces measures to expedite Rasmale' project

Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has revealed plans to nullify the existing agreement for the Rasmale' land reclamation project due to delays. Speaking at a press conference, he outlined the ministry's efforts over the past six months, emphasizing the significance of the Rasmale' initiative in addressing housing challenges in Male'.

The project, which commenced on December 18, 2023, involves reclaiming land awarded to Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMC) and the Netherlands' Boskalis. Originally slated for completion within 18 months, the project's progress has been hindered by CMC's financial constraints. To expedite the project, Housing Development Corporation Limited (HDC) will seek additional measures while revising the existing agreement.

In addition to land reclamation, the ministry plans to implement vital infrastructure such as water, sewage systems, roads, and electricity. Despite budgetary constraints from the previous government, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has resolved to proceed using contractor finance, allocating land from Hulhumale' and Fushidhiggaru Falhu to the contractors. However, adjustments will be made to existing contracts due to project delays.

Furthermore, Minister Muththalib highlighted ongoing efforts to develop 15,000 housing units in collaboration with a Chinese company, ensuring high-quality standards. The Rasmale' project aims to provide a total of 65,000 housing units, transforming the area into an Eco City adhering to environmental standards.
